Machining a Custom Gantry Rail for the Frankenoko
It's finally time to start making progress on getting a functioning CNC into my garage. On today's episode of questionable ideas on a CNC, we're going to cut a 40-inch long aluminum extrusion on a machine with a 33-inch wide bed.

Starting From a Scratch - 2024 Shop Update
Просмотров 25 тыс.5 месяцев назад
Hello guys, it's been awhile. In case you've been wondering where I've been, the TLDR is: I bought a house, my free time evaporated, I got married, and I’m struggling to rebuild my shop. The longer version of all that is 2023's been quite busy for me, between various maker-related trips and planning out my dream one-car garage (which does sound a bit like an oxymoron). This is everything I've b...

Machining Drink Coasters on a $100,000 CNC
Просмотров 44 тыс.Год назад
Today we're taking a look at what it's like to use a CNC machine that's way outside my budget, the Datron Neo. This is a CNC that many (myself included) have drooled over in social media posts for it's seemingly effortless machining of aluminum, blistering speed, and crazy precision. But does it live up to the hype? Is the magical vacuum workholding system as effective as it's made out to be? L...

An Unnecessarily Heavy Box w/ Epoxy & Aluminum Honeycomb Accents

Last year I was commissioned to create a gift for an engineer. Here's what I knew: He was an aviation geek, hexagon lover, and (almost hypocritically) a connoisseur of horrendously over-engineered designs. This is the story of how I designed a wildly impractical box. Blending typical woodworking techniques for making a box with some composite materials (aluminum honeycomb and epoxy), I came up ...

Amazing tips! Flattening the waste board is a no brainer. But checking if the flute is in a 90degree angle to the wasteboard is very overlooked. I will check mine as its giving very rough lines in my parts when doing surface milling

You absolutely can, just keep in mind that pockets and concave areas need to be vented. So some tiny holes modeled or drilled through the mold would be recommended.

Was it a scrap build from parts you had laying around to bootstrap a CNC? Otherwise I'd have gone for ball screws and linear rails instead of those delrin rollers on V track and belts. With ball screws you'd have plenty of power to use even heavier and stiffer materials like steel tubing. I also dislike the Z axis sticking out so much under the gantry, seems such a waste for Z travel. In my latest build I've made sure the Z axis parts don't stick out under the gantry. There are times I really needed the 200+mm of Z travel to clear some high features under the gantry. Looking forward to the bits and bobs you've added to this build!

Someone mentioned wipe down (preferably right before glueing) with mineral spirits to remove the oil. Also don’t use a water based glue as oil and water doesn’t mix, use something like a polyurethane glue…. Once placing the internal piece, pin with a pin nailer to hold the position to prevent slipping. A sprinkle of salt will also help prevent slipping.

About the cheapest and most adaptable storage system for tools etc. I recommend looking into the French cleat system, very easy to make and remain movable at all times as you expand. Great for saving wall space and not encroaching into your workspace. There are many videos on RUclips with some great ideas.

Nice project, I also justify "saving" a day's work to modify or build a new tool (but we all know it's gonna take 10x the time that you are saving) ;) ! I designed and built a larger scale CNC Router and adding weight is indead a commun pratice, I must have 200kg / 440 lbs of sand in my fixed frame, that's why we love old cast iron machine, they are rigid and heavy so result in less vibrations and a nicer cut quality. You might be able to justify that the gantry doesn't need to be full of sand since it's weight might reduce your cut speed, especialy if you are limited in stepper power/size, belt size or that your linear motion system isn't rigid enough (like you said) but there's absolutly no need to reduce the weight of the fixed axis rail in my opinion ! In the end, It would be very interesting do get a side by side "sound" and speed (acceleration) comparaison between a standard machine and one that's been "lighten" !

3D manual/digital probes or edge finders make finding parts fixtured in a random location and orientation easy. Takes 2 (3, or 4 for sanity checks) points per face then using X,Y coordinates to constrain points in CAD to adjust stock in CAD to match location in reality.

Make sure you're using 3 flute, or less, endmills when machining softer materials. He mentioned using a single flute finish mill at one point, but I'd opt for 2. Only cut about 10 percent of your endmills diameter to start, and whatever tooling you buy should have surface feet and inches or millimeters per revolution ranges for different materials right on the packaging. Use those values to find your feeds and speeds using the formulas
